JUST ANOTHER BEAUTIFUL FAMILY FILM FESTIVAL PREMIER!
I never expected to put filmmaker on my resume.
In fact when @declaredominion told me that she wanted to actually go ahead with the crazy plan of submitting us for a STORYHIVE 50k Short Documentary Grant, with this idea of telling the beauty of our perfectly ordinary suburban family, I flat out said, “No!”
We have 5 kids, a dog, a few businesses and a marriage that I really wanted to keep and I couldn’t see how making a film would fit comfortably into that.
It wasn’t about vulnerability, or wanting to tell our story or not, it was about time and money.
As I’m sure you may have guessed, raising 5 kids costs many dollar dollar bills y’all and spending all the time with them and making all the money to support them seem to be at direct odds with each other.
I was sure that I couldn’t do even one more thing. Not even if Obama himself came down from the mountain with a mission.
Then my best friend @sksenak said to me, “You can always do more than you think you can.”
But I love this community. I love my family. And I know that when I was tormented about transitioning, if I could have seen another family like mine out there— a family with a trans parent loving and living and thriving— it would have given me such peace.
So here we are.
My wife, my love, my best friend Katherine is the unsung hero of this film.
She fought for it tooth and nail every step of the way. She fought to tell the real story. Not the easy predictable surface-level story, but the one beneath it. For that, and for her love, I will be eternally grateful.
